Pollinator

Honey comes from bees, who are pollinators. Pollinators are insects that carry pollen from one flower to another. Other pollinators include birds.

Autotroph

An autotroph is an organism that is able to form nutritional organic substances from simple inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide. Most plants are autotrophs as they make their own food using energy from the sun.

Exoskeleton

This is a picture of a spider hanging on a web, representing the term exoskeleton. An exoskeleton is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal's body.

Seed Dispersal

This photo represents seed dispersal. The pine cone fell from the tree, and will be planted into the ground. Seed dispersal is the movement or transport of seeds away from the parent plant.

Introduced Species

This photo represents introduced species. The tag on the plant tells us that it came from somewhere else and planted in front of my apartment. The plant is placed where it does not naturally occur.

Animal with a Three-Segmented Body

This picture shows an animal with a three-segmented body. It is an ant, found on a sidewalk near my house.

Adaptation In a Plant

These photos represent adaptation in a plant. In the first one, it shows how despite having concrete put on it, the grass continues to grow through the cracks. In the second one, the tree has messed up a sidewalk by continuing to grow.

Cambium

Cambium is a layer of actively dividing cells between xylem (wood) and phloem (bast) tissues that is responsible for the secondary growth of stems, root stems, and roots.

Bilateral Symmetry

This photo represents bilateral symmetry. Bilateral Symmetry is the property of being divisible into symmetrical halves on either side of a unique plane. In this photo the human face is represented; other examples include butterflies.

Asexual Reproduction

This photo represents asexual reproduction. The moss growing on the brick was produced asexually, or reproduction that did not involve fertilization. The offspring is an exact clone of the parent organism.

Anther and Filament of Stamen

This picture shows two parts of the flower: anther and filament of stamen. The stamen is the "male," pollen-bearing organ, the anther is where the pollen is produced and stored, and the filament is the stalk of the anther.

Mutualism

This picture represents mutualism. Humans breathe in oxygen and let out carbon dioxide; trees take in carbon dioxide and let out oxygen. It is a mutualistic relationship.

Eukaryote

My pet parakeet Jack is a eukaryote, or a multi-celled organism.

Lipid Used For Energy Storage

Nuts are an example of lipids used for energy storage. Carbohydrates give a quick source of energy while lipids provide longer term storage.

Connective Tissue

This picture represents connective tissue. Connective tissue is what connects, supports, binds, or separates other tissues or organs. An example of connective tissue is cartilage, found in the framework of the nose.

Population

This photo represents our human population. It shows how our population moves out and about within the city.

Cellulose

This photo represent cellulose. The major component in the rigid cell walls in plants is cellulose. Carrots contain cellulose in way of fiber; it is not digested by the human body.

CAM Plant

Pineapple is a CAM Plant. A CAM Plant is characterized by the fact that it tends to live in desert conditions, and is slow in growing.

C4 Plant

Corn is a C4 Plant. A C4 Plant is characterized by the fact that it tends to grow in high temperatures with high sunlight intesity.

C3 Plant

Rice is a C3 Plant. A C3 plant is characterized by the fact that it tends to thrive in areas where sunlight intensity and temperatures are moderate, and ground water is plentiful.

Hydrophilic

This photo represents a substance that that is hydrophilic: salt. It means having a tendency to mix with, dissolve in, or be wetted by water.

Hydrophobic

This photo represents the term hydrophobic. Oil is hydrophobic: it repels and does not mix with water.

Enzyme

This photo is a representation of enzymes, or yogurt. Yogurt contains enzymes, which are molecules that increase the rates of chemical reactions. The bacterial cultures in yogurt contain the enzyme called lactase, which help with breaking down the major sugar in milk.

Cuticle Layer of a Plant

This photo shows a representation of the cuticle layer of a plant. The cuticle layer of a plant is a non-cellular protective layer that protects the epidermis of the green parts of leaves. It also provides support for the plants much like human skin. It is almost wax-like.

I'm Back

I know it has been a while since my last post, but in that gap of time I have been gathering photos of the terms provided. Here is a link for the list: http://www.californiascienceteacher.com/classes-taught/apbiology/collection-list.html

The Beginning

Today, June 25, 2012, I start my AP Biology summer assignment where I have to go out and find individual biological items of terms my teacher provided.
